Big crowds were transported into The Noosphere at Subtext this Friday night. Charles Glaubitz has outdone himself by delivering an astounding 70 pieces for this show. We’re looking forward to the first show of our summer season by Tijuana-based artist Charles Glaubitz, entitled The Noosphere. Charles was born in Tijuana and grew up in Rosarito Beach, a small town just 25 minutes away from the San Diego / Tijuana international border. After graduating from San Diego City College, Glaubitz became a successful illustrator and has shown in galleries around the worlds including New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Paris, Madrid, Mexico City, Tijuana, San Diego and Seattle. He has also been recognized in HOW Magazine, American Illustration 21, 22, 23 and Communication Arts.

When Tijuana artist Charles Glaubitz explains his new show “The Noosphere,” at Subtext Friday through July 17, you have to listen as if you had just after woken up from some surreal dream. For those first few hazy minutes even the most nonsensical pieces require no conscious explanation, but you know by midday you’ll have no idea what crystal wombs, the Illuminati, the Child Donkey and King Jaguar have to do with each other. Or you.
Subtext’s invite summed it up coherently enough:
“Charles Glaubitz’s work is influenced by unseen things, mysticism, quantum physics, comics, the stories of ancient cultures, animation, myths, and alchemy. Each series of works is a new chapter in the mythic narrative of the ethereal beings ‘Los Eternos’ and the Starseed Children (mythical avatars to the Beautiful Dreamers). The Beautiful Dreamers are cosmic children who create ‘the Dreamtime’ (a psychic state of contact with the ancestral spirits, the source or the fountain). They habitat ‘The Noosphere’ which is the collective unconscious transformed into conscious awareness.”
But when you ask Glaubitz what it all means, well, that’s when it gets deeply trippy:
T: What exactly is “The Noosphere?”
CG: In the original theory of Vernadsky, the noosphere is the third in a succession of phases of development of the earth, after the geosphere (inanimate matter) and the biosphere (biological life). Just as the emergence of life fundamentally transformed the geosphere, the emergence of human cognition fundamentally transforms the biosphere.
I first came about the concept of the noospehre reading a article on Jose Arguelles by Will Black “Beyond the End of the World: Navigating Our Personal Apocalypse” on realitysandwich.com a couple of months ago and it seemed to parallel all other concepts of this unified field of collective consciousness, thoughts or human energy that mythology has been talking about since the beginning of the story and quantum physics just recently.
Also, it is parallel to the idea of the Beautiful Dreamers that I have been working on recently as a extension of the eternal Starseed Children cycle metanarrative. It is a concept that might unify all these other beautiful expressions of our collective creative humanity. So I tried to explore the concept through the recent work.
T: What is a Starseed Child?
CG: A Starseed Child is a warrior-like child, a generation of the end result of the evolution of revolution within our system of genetics, philosophy, science, art, etc. They are endowed with direct access to our past history and have all the wisdom present and all the conflicts resolved from the past. The next quantum step or as Terence Mckenna calls it “novelty” for transformation. In my work they are represented by an indigo child, a crystal child, a nahual (animal child) who are set out on a journey to find all seven Starseed Children to join forces to defeat the Illuminati and their masters the annunaki and the coming of the black darkness.
T: Why don’t they have eyes, noses and mouths?
CG: Shape, form and color have a symbolic meaning, an inherent meaning that communicates emotion and feeling. Eliminating the facial features I think makes them seem more melancholic, mysterious and open … open enough that viewers can project their meanings onto them.
T: So when the Starseed Children create Dreamtime to communicate with ancestral spirits, what exactly do they communicate?
CG: They are narrating the same cycle over again, each cycle is narrated to a new generation so it is not forgotten, each time we remember the specifics of the story more and more.
T: How do Starseed Children and Beautiful Dreamers relate to human beings?
CG: We all want a beautiful world, we all want to change our world and I think deep down inside we all want to fight for our dreams to become real.
T: What’s next for the Beautiful Dreamers?
CG: I’m working on the following chapters — “Black Darkness,” “The Melancholy of Croaking,” and “The Cult of the Orange Seed” — as well as the intertwined stories of the Beautiful Dreamers, who are the dreamers/users who dream this story into being.

some studio shots, the entrance to my studio space or as it is said in spanish "estudio".

I get some light from the small windows that face the street and get a lot of trafick during the day, the police and firefighters stations are only two blocks away and a high school two blosck away...so it can get noisy.

Here are som random shots of stuff I have in the studio, I am really messy and when I get into "it" groove of working I just go a little bezerk and make a mess of everything. In my studio I have everything I need, my books, my comic books and lots of sapce for my crap.

some times the best place for me to put stuff om is everywhere, especially the floor.

This piece was created for my spring illustration 120 2010 class at San Diego City College, it was used as a demo to show students how to create a illustration mixing traditional and digital medias (painting, drawing and photoshop). I had very good results and some extremely good final pieces from a handful of students.

It was a little of a struggle since my class is a beguinning class andmost students did not have any computer experience at all!And on top of that I am still firung out how to blend both digital and traditional in my work.

Any way it was good experience.

I am a aviud comic book reader, have been since a little kid...nothing geeks me out better than a grant morrison comic, mike mignola art, moebuis, alejandro jodorowsky and jeff lemiere who has written three great works that i have read... Essex county trilogy (must read), The nobody (graphic novel) and his comic from Vertigo comics Sweet Tooth.

It is by far one of the best reads and visuals in a while that I have seen, love the slowly intimate development of the narrative and the great expressionistic independent visual art. check it out here:

Sketchbook drawing, doodle

I did this sketch a while back november/december 2009 for a workshop I was teaching at CECUT (centro cultural tijuana/tijuana cultural center). The project was to create a parable, methaphor or image that could in fact add to my favorite buddisht proverb"at the end all that matters, is how fully you lived, how fully you loved and how fully you learn to let go".

Most students where stump with the idea of comunicating this idea, they had a hard time grasping that you could crete a illustration that was not literal or see say in any sense and still comunicate the idea. After a passionate lecture of letting go of preconceived ideas, notions, reality and inject their concept with imagination...most succeded in creating a good image.

So back to the present 2010, I was going through my sketchbook from that time and found this image of a boy v.s. a tornado trowing his paper airplane at it...I stopped and asked myself what does this mean? confronting impending doom, a problem, a disaster, a situation, a opportunity in a game of chance and confront it with a paper airplane wich could be anything depending on what is on the piece of paper that is being throwened at the tornado, a drawing, a wish, a desire, a sigil, a poem, a story, a experience of life...and then I get it, the experince of life, love manifested in a creative way turned into a vehicle to let go.

Illustration done for Artbook for Darfur, I was contacted by Jorge alderete http://www.jorgealderete.com/ in mexico city ti participate in creating a image for a book of art to pass around to get signatures to rpesent to the united nations for them to do something about the atrocities that are happenning in Darfur.

been working on smoe pieces for a show in upperplayground mexico, a bunch of drawings of a story that is "The crystal sigil"...about 80 sumi ink drawings on watercolor paper tell the story of the introduction of a new character to the mythology of "The Eternals" and the 1st battle between the starseed children and the annunaki and the illumaniti.

Here is the painitng process that we saw in class the past week and me finishing it in my studio.rough sketch

remember that we are starting from the background to foreground, so the fisrt you lay down in the background color, large shapes and forms.

second trace down your image on the painting surface and begin to flesh out the larger shapes with color, try to place as much color all around the image, going back and forth and not focus on place

after all the shapes are blocked in with color, then we can go to the small detalis in the illustration

here I have already giving more shadow and light, eliminated some lines work and decided to go with shading...especigically in the boys arm...this is pretty close to finish

retooling some finer details

the final stage is the glaze/wash/patina of a mix of a small amount of raw sienna and matte medium to bring back all the illustration to a neutral ground

Then we go back in and we pick/pull out some hightlights and shadows over the illustration, to bring the separation from the fore ground (boy) to the middle ground (girl) and create a quick illusion of depth.

This is a video I recorded on my laptop of me art directing and teaching (trying) how make a better sketch to one of my summer illustration workshop in Tijuana, working on rithym, composition, harmony, scale, and priority. TOOO BAD YOU WONT UNDERSTAND BECAUSE IT IS IN SPANISH, unless of coourse you speak spanish...then all is hunky dory.

Here is a animated video I did recently for a show in Tijuana, it is called "Star rain" I used a original painting and animated it in adobe after effects and then used toonboom for the line animation, please bare with since I taught myself both after effects and toonboom in a month to meet the show's deadline.

Here is the proces for "El Topo" illustration I did last year for terraza dentro del Centro Cultural de España en Mexico (www.ccemx.org ). The theme was to make a illustration for a mural about mexican cinema for the Spain cultural center in MExico city, I choose Alejandro's jodorowsky masterpiece el topo for the assigment.

poster for my friends a local rock band 1973, this was done awhile back for a 15th year celebration of one of Tijuna's oldest music store "La ciruela electrica" who has survived diferent genres of what is cool and good music in tijuana from it's punk rock scene with "Tijuana No" to "Nortec" and the indy rock scene.

The illustration is about going back to the fountain, to the source by choice.
